EPS Sgt. Alex Decoteau Honoured on Indigenous Veterans Day

Local Indigenous Service Member Recognized for Dedication and Bravery

On November 8, 2023, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) held a special ceremony to honour Sergeant Alex Decoteau, an Indigenous member of the EPS, on Indigenous Veterans Day.

Decoteau's Accomplishments and Contributions

Decoteau has served with the EPS for over 20 years and has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication and bravery in his role. He has received numerous awards and commendations for his outstanding service, including the Medal of Valour, the highest honour for bravery in Canada.

In addition to his police work, Decoteau is also a strong advocate for Indigenous rights and culture. He is a member of the EPS Indigenous Advisory Committee and has worked tirelessly to promote understanding and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Recognizing Indigenous Veterans

Indigenous Veterans Day is a day to honour the contributions and sacrifices made by Indigenous people who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces. It is an opportunity to recognize the unique challenges and experiences faced by Indigenous veterans, and to celebrate their strength and resilience.

The ceremony to honour Decoteau was attended by EPS Chief Dale McFee, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, and representatives from Indigenous organizations and community groups. Decoteau was presented with a plaque and a traditional Indigenous eagle feather as a symbol of his accomplishments and contributions.

Continuing Commitment to Reconciliation

The EPS is committed to continuing its work towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities. The service has implemented a number of initiatives to improve relationships with Indigenous peoples, including the creation of the Indigenous Advisory Committee and the development of cultural awareness training for officers.

The honouring of Decoteau on Indigenous Veterans Day is a testament to the EPS's commitment to reconciliation and its recognition of the important role that Indigenous people play in our community.
