Paul Waring birdied the last to join a four-way tie for the lead on day two of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Waring's 73 meant he joined overnight leader Thomas Pieters, Shubhankar Sharma and Rafa Cabrera Bello on seven under par, with Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood a stroke back.

Pieters set the clubhouse target with a 69 but Waring's late birdie saw him join the Belgian at the summit.

He made amends with a birdie on the ninth but dropped another shot on the 11th.

Fleetwood then birdied the 12th and holed from 20 feet for another on the 14th before a birdie on the 16th took him to seven under.

However, he dropped a shot on the 17th after finding the water off the tee.

McIlroy had also made a poor start with a bogey on the second but birdied the next and then holed from 30 feet on the fifth.

The Northern Irishman then birdied the seventh and ninth to turn in 32.

He dropped a shot on the 11th but birdied the 12th and 14th to get back to seven under.

However, he then bogeyed the 16th and 17th to slip back to six under.

Cabrera Bello had started the day two behind but birdied the first and fourth to move into contention.

The Spaniard then birdied the seventh and ninth to turn in 32.
