Fonseca: "Milan's issues were in defence, not attack. Crosses caused problem against Cagliari"
Milan managed to snatch a 4-1 victory at newly-promoted Cagliari on Saturday, but coach Paulo Fonseca was not entirely satisfied with what he saw from his players.
While the Rossoneri scored four times, Fonseca pointed out that they could have defended better against Cagliari's crosses, which led to the hosts' only goal of the match.
The Portuguese coach told Sky Sport Italia: "We scored four goals, but we also conceded. Their goal came from a cross, and we had problems with these crosses from Cagliari. We need to improve in defence, not in attack."
Fonseca also pointed out that Milan made too many mistakes in the first half, which allowed Cagliari to get back into the game after falling behind to an early goal from Rafael Leao.
"In the first half, we conceded too much space to Cagliari and we made too many mistakes, which allowed them to come back," Fonseca added.
"In the second half, we played better and we scored three more goals, but we need to improve our concentration and our defensive organisation."
Despite Fonseca's criticism, Milan moved up to second place in the Serie A table with the win, and they will be looking to continue their good form when they host Bologna on Tuesday.
Here are the main points from Fonseca's post-match press conference:
- Milan's issues were in defence, not attack.
- Crosses caused problems against Cagliari.
- Milan made too many mistakes in the first half.
- Milan played better in the second half and scored three more goals.
- Milan need to improve their concentration and defensive organisation.
