Leipzig falters against Gladbach's staunch defense, Bayern Munich extends lead
Leipzig's title hopes suffer a setback in Mönchengladbach
RB Leipzig's Bundesliga title aspirations suffered a setback on Saturday as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Leipzig failed to find a way past the resolute Gladbach defense, led by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
The result leaves Leipzig nine points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who defeated Union Berlin 3-0 earlier in the day. With just nine games remaining in the season, Leipzig's hopes of catching Bayern are fading fast.
Gladbach's defense shines against Leipzig's attack
Gladbach's defense was in inspired form on Saturday, frustrating Leipzig's attack at every turn. Sommer made a string of impressive saves, while the Gladbach back four stood firm against the relentless Leipzig pressure.
Leipzig had 65% possession and 17 shots on goal, but they were unable to find a way past Sommer or the Gladbach defense. The hosts were particularly dangerous on the counter-attack, with Marcus Thuram and Alassane Pléa causing problems for the Leipzig backline.
Leipzig rue missed chances
Leipzig will rue the missed chances that cost them victory on Saturday. The visitors had several clear-cut opportunities to score, but they failed to take advantage of them.
Timo Werner was particularly wasteful in front of goal, missing two gilt-edged chances in the first half. Emil Forsberg and Dani Olmo also had chances to score, but they were unable to beat Sommer.
Bayern Munich extend lead at the top
Bayern Munich took full advantage of Leipzig's slip-up on Saturday, defeating Union Berlin 3-0 to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to nine points.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice for Bayern, while Serge Gnabry also found the net. The victory was Bayern's ninth in a row in the Bundesliga, and they are now closing in on a 10th consecutive league title.
