Manchester United ‘return’ for £75m-rated defender as ‘replacement’ for outgoing star identified
Red Devils switch focus to Serie A centre-back amid concerns over top target
Manchester United have reportedly shifted their attention to Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as their primary target for the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, but the Senegalese international's high price tag is said to have put them off.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, United have now turned their focus to Bastoni, who is valued at around £75million.
The 23-year-old has been a key player for Inter Milan this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions and helping them to win the Serie A title.
Bastoni is a left-footed centre-back who is comfortable playing in a back four or a back three. He is also a good passer of the ball and has a strong aerial presence.
He would be a direct replacement for Eric Bailly, who is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Bailly has fallen down the pecking order at United and has only made seven appearances in all competitions this season.
The Ivorian defender is said to be unhappy with his lack of playing time and is looking to leave the club.
If United do sign Bastoni, it would be a major coup for the club. He is one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and would be a valuable addition to Erik ten Hag's squad.
