Milan loses shoot-out with Cagliari after late win over Real
Rossoneri crashed out of Coppa Italia after penalty shoot-out defeat in Sardinia
Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno was the hero of the hour, saving two penalties in the shootout as AC Milan crashed out of the Coppa Italia at the quarter-final stage on Thursday.
The Rossoneri had looked to be cruising into the last four after Rafael Leao's stunning strike in the second half had given them a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in their last-16 tie on Tuesday.
However, they were brought crashing back down to earth in Sardinia as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cagliari, who equalised through Leonardo Pavoletti in the 94th minute.
The game went to penalties and Cragno saved spot-kicks from Franck Kessie and Alexis Saelemaekers to give Cagliari a famous victory.
It was a disappointing end to Milan's Coppa Italia campaign, but they can now focus on their Serie A title challenge.
They are currently top of the table, two points clear of second-placed Napoli, and have a game in hand over their rivals.
Their nächstes Spiel is at home to Spezia on Sunday.
