Paul Waring's record 61 opens huge lead in Abu Dhabi
Paul Waring fired a course-record 12-under par 61 to open up a four-shot lead after the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Thursday.
The Englishman, ranked 243rd in the world, carded an eagle and eight birdies in a flawless display on the National Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
Sweden's Alexander Björk is Waring's nearest challenger after a 65, with world number one Rory McIlroy a shot further back alongside compatriot Jonathan Caldwell.
Defending champion Shane Lowry is among a group of four players on six under par, while Tyrrell Hatton is in the chasing pack on five under.
Waring made a flying start with an eagle at the par-five second hole and picked up further shots at the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth to make the turn in 29.
He added birdies at the 10th, 12th, 15th and 18th to complete a remarkable round.
"It was a great day," said Waring. "I played really well and made a lot of putts. I'm very happy with my round."
Björk, who won the Betfred British Masters last year, is also in good form after a tie for third in the Dubai Desert Classic last week.
The Swede made six birdies and an eagle on the par-five 18th to move into contention.
"I played really well today," said Björk. "I hit it close and made a lot of putts. I'm looking forward to the next few days."
McIlroy, who is looking to win the Abu Dhabi Championship for a third time, made a solid start with four birdies and a bogey.
The Northern Irishman is playing for the first time since the Hero World Challenge in December and is hoping to get his season off to a good start.
"I'm pleased with my round," said McIlroy. "I hit the ball well and made some good putts. I'm in a good position after the first day."
The second round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship continues on Friday.
