RuneScape creator pleads for gamers to give upcoming MMO Brighter Shores a chance
Jagex founder Andrew Gower believes new game will be a return to firm's roots
The MMORPG, due out in 2023, is described as being 'living, breathing and player-led'
The founder of RuneScape has called on gamers to give his new MMORPG, Brighter Shores, a chance when it's released in 2023.
Andrew Gower, who created RuneScape with his brother Paul in 2001, is the creative director of Brighter Shores. He said the game is a return to the company's roots as well as a step forward.
“Brighter Shores is a living, breathing and player-led world that offers an alternative to the theme park MMOs that dominate the genre today,” Gower said in a blog post.
“We believe that players are tired of being led by the nose through a linear storyline and instead want to create their own stories and adventures.
“Brighter Shores is a game where you can do just that. There is no set path to follow, no predetermined quests to complete.
“Instead, you are free to explore the world, make friends, build your own home, start a business, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery.”
Gower said that while RuneScape was one of the first MMOs to offer a truly open world, the genre has since moved away from that model.
“With Brighter Shores, we're going back to our roots and giving players the freedom to choose their own path,” he said.
“We believe that Brighter Shores is the future of MMOs, and we can't wait to share it with the world.”
Brighter Shores is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2023.
