Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Caucasus mountains
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck North Ossetia, a republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia, on Friday, February 9, 2023, at 11:01 pm local time, according to the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Physics of the Earth. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the mountainous area of North Ossetia, near the border with Georgia.
The earthquake was felt in the capital of North Ossetia, Vladikavkaz, and in the neighboring Stavropol Krai, where people reported feeling tremors in the cities of Stavropol, Pyatigorsk, and Kislovodsk. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The tremors from the earthquake reached Stavropol, a city located approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the epicenter. Stavropol residents reported feeling tremors that lasted for several seconds. Some people reported feeling the tremors in their homes and offices, while others said they felt the ground shaking.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
North Ossetia is located in the seismically active Caucasus region, which is prone to earthquakes. The last major earthquake to hit North Ossetia was a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in 2008 that caused significant damage and killed over 50 people.
The authorities in North Ossetia and Stavropol Krai are monitoring the situation and have not issued any evacuation orders. People have been advised to remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities.
