The 2024 Ballon d'Or: Rodri beats Vinicius Junior by a handful of votes
Shock result as Manchester City midfielder takes home the prestigious award
Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior was the heavy favorite, but Rodri's incredible season for Manchester City was enough to edge him out in the voting.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or was awarded to Manchester City midfielder Rodri on Monday night, in a shock result that saw him beat Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior by a handful of votes.
Vinicius Junior was the heavy favorite for the award after a stunning season for Real Madrid, in which he helped the club win the Champions League and La Liga.
However, Rodri's incredible season for Manchester City was enough to edge him out in the voting.
The Spanish midfielder was a key part of City's Premier League title-winning team, and he also played a starring role in their run to the Champions League semi-finals.
Rodri's performances for both club and country were enough to convince the voters that he was the best player in the world over the past year.
He is the first Manchester City player to win the Ballon d'Or since Sergio Aguero in 2019.
In his acceptance speech, Rodri thanked his teammates, his manager, and his family for their support.
"I am so proud to win this award," he said. "It is a dream come true."
"I want to thank my teammates for their incredible support. I would not be here without them."
"I also want to thank my manager, Pep Guardiola, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to shine."
"And finally, I want to thank my family for their love and support. They have always been there for me, and I am so grateful for everything they have done."
